UCD's flexible e-Infrastructure - Delivering services to staff and students anywhere in the world

Genevieve Dalton - UCD

In developing the UCD IT Strategy 2009-2013 the characteristics and demands of our user community were summarized as “Highly Mobile”, demonstrated by 80+% laptop ownership with a preference for wireless networks, “Strong bias for electronic information”, with over 70% regular use of on-line web and library resources. These user characteristics and needs drove IT Services to make the expansion of mobile services to cater for the new student profile a priority over the last 3 years. We started with making our key services such as our virtual learning environment, software applications, collaboration tools & library services location independent and then moved onto making these services device independent supporting smart phones as well as laptops which is a work still in progress.
