Lecture Capture: The Challenges of Supporting Digitally Assisted Learning in a Modern University
Kilian Murphy - UCC
The lecture capture project at University College Cork has been in train now for over six years. Many challenges were met and overcome. Lecture capture, including live streaming, is now available as standard in all teaching rooms, and available to all staff computers. In the past year over 3500 users have engaged the system. Many University modules regularly use or are dependent on the system.
In 2014 the lecture capture system was moved to a cloud hosted platform to improve availability, reliability and expandability, which are key to the success of the project.
The Audio Visual Media Services team at UCC were charged with delivering these systems and through its implementation the team has had to develop and adapt their skills, build and expand the system, engage with academics and user groups. Much was learned along the way.
The presentation will include:
• Lessons learned after five years
• Benefits to the University
• Alleviating the fears of users
• Moving from in house to cloud hosting
• Integration with VLE – Blackboard and Moodle
• Infrastructure – equipping the classrooms
• Other applications
