Gavin Henrick - LTS

This presentation will tackle the [1] Open Badges system that a new online standard to recognize and verify learning. The presentation will have two parts. Firstly, we will introduce Open Badges;

• What are Open Badges, where they have come from what are they for?
• Who is using them – providing examples of different sectors, educational and non-educational sectors where Open Badges have been used?
• Why are they using them? – a look at badges for gamification and also for certification of skills and achievements [2].
• How do they work? How they work from the earners point of view and how they work from the issuer point of view
• How can someone earn badges?
• How do organisations award badges? This will refer to the many solutions that can be used including the various LMS including Blackboard, Canvas, Desire2Learn, Moodle and other simpler systems.

The second part of the session will focus on introduce a practical process framework [3] for managing and designing Open Badges initiatives. We will introduce a list of Key Employability skills [4] [5] [6] for Students and challenge the attendees to consider how these can be credited within education.

We will bring attendees through the framework and then different groups (or individuals if room can’t handle groups) will write up one framework briefly how they would manage issuing a badge for one of the key graduate Employability skills.
We will then discuss one or two of the frameworks what the options are.
