Some of the logistics and challenges faced running IT & communications in a severe and hostile Antarctica.

Danny McFadden spent 10 months as Communications Manager at the Rothera research station in Antarctia, in charge of all things IT for the residents on the base and visiting scientists.

Rothera is a gateway to Antarctica for several countries and with numerous aircraft passing or landing, it can be busier than most regional Irish airports.

Danny and his team provided an air traffic control service for five of the aircraft based in Antarctica, as well as transiting aircraft heading onwards to the South Pole and providing flight information to aircraft for thousands of miles, from southern Chile to the South Pole...
