Virtual Reality: A New Dimension to Education

Consumer-available Virtual Reality technology is a novel platform largely undiscovered in technology enhanced learning.

The Royal College of Surgeons piloted the application of the technology in 2015. Since 2015, we have trialled a number of beneficial applications in medical education including the use of 360 degree videos, virtual reality ‘educational games’ and anatomical learning. Through feedback we have determined the technology benefits from high engagement, entertainment and a distraction-free environment. Virtual Reality may be considered a viable platform for technology enhanced learning and we hope to share our enthusiasm with the audience.

We aim to share our experiences of Virtual Reality in RCSI over the last two years and perhaps where the technology may be heading in the future.
