Introducing DESSI – a ‘Data-Enabled Student Success Initiative’

Room A - Fri 11:00

Lee O'Farrell - National Forum T&L

DESSI is a new data-informed student success initiative borne out of a collaboration between the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning and HEAnet.

This collaboration has given rise to the establishment of a new partnership which will serve to understand and progress student success ambitions across the sector. This new partnership includes representation from: the IUA, THEA, HECA, HEAnet, EduCampus, ISSE, and the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning.

The National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning has been undertaking a national Learning Analytics project since September 2016, which has served to:

• Develop an evidence base for understanding the status of analytics both internationally and across the Irish HE sector
• Develop a national repository of analytics resources that will be available by the beginning of the 2017/18 academic year
• Convene a national network of researchers and practitioners whose expertise covers the broad spectrum of requirements for effective analytics implementation.

HEAnet has been involved throughout the project and have indicated a readiness to investigate technologies that could best support the needs of the sector, leveraging the available HEAnet services portfolio as appropriate, to include Edugate, HEAnet’s national federated access identity service.

The ambitions of the new partnership are:

• The foremost focus of the partnership will be strengthening a key pillar of higher education, namely improving student learning, success and retention across the sector.
• This initiative will help to close the gap between the Irish and key overseas HE sectors in terms of analytics readiness and maturity

This talk will describe project progress to date while also setting out a road map to achieve the above stated ambitions by the end of the initiative term, December 2018.
